Abubakari Alhassan is inspired by the customs and artistic traditions of the Fulani people of Africa. They are the largest nomadic group in the world. They are herders and traders and every year they select a new leader. A message is passed to the other groups with the time and place for the contest, so each may select someone deemed worthy to represent them. The new leader will be the strongest one who wins a wrestling contest, and is given the male mask included in this set. The new leader must chose a new bride and the marriage ceremony must take place before the celebrations are over. She is given the female mask. Alhassan replicates the sese wood pieces with outstanding care for detail. These tall sculptures are adorned with painted details and embossed aluminum plates. The Fulani name for these masks in Junwali, meaning Welcome.
