For Fernando Sarvide, a flea is fierce as a dragon. With a spotted body, forked tongue and frightful spikes on its back, this bug is inspired by Oaxaca's alebrijes, usually carved from wood to follow the natural shape of the branch. These fanciful sculptures take their name from a Caló gypsy word for something difficult, tangled, confusing or fantastic. The image comes to life as a handcrafted display jigsaw puzzle.
