A scene from the famed Hindu Ramayana epic finds delicate expression on this handcrafted box. Rawana, the evil ogre-king, becomes obsessed with Sita, completely enchanted by her beauty. Hoping to obtain her as a concubine, Rawana sends one of his knights to tempt Sita by transforming him into a golden deer. The animal captures her curiosity, and Sita asks her husband Rama to catch the singular creature. Wayan Rendah uses ebony to depict this legendary event, as intricate carvings enter naturally into the wood's elegant surface.
