Catrina wears a whimsical hat with flowers and smiles a flirty grin. This sculpture by Armando RamÃrez commemorates Mexico's Day of the Dead. The Catrina name refers to death personified who is always dressed in exuberant fashion and colors in order to lure mortals. Always creative, RamÃrez recycles castoff auto parts and discarded bits of metal. Wire mesh becomes a broad-brimmed bonnet while sheet metal scraps are transformed into her gown, shawl and handbag. A clutch foot forms the body; the face comes from a motor's rocker arm. RamÃrez does not give his sculptures a fine polished finish, therefore smudges and scratches may be present.
