Exquisitely detailed, this extraordinary batik is the work of Balinese artist Ida Bagus Lawa Bargawa. The Hindu epic Ramayana inspires each vignette, with the central panel depicting Sugriva, the Balinese name for Hanoman, with his brother Kiskenda Subali. Both brothers are feuding over the love of a woman. There is meaning in this painting, the artist says. A man must be introspective in order to avoid disputes among relatives, families and communities so that the world is always safe and peaceful. The fine details are astonishing.
