Guanajuato, capital of the same-named state, is threaded with tunnels that twist underneath the old town center. These tunnels are the vestigial remains of the Guanajuato River, which coursed underneath the city. Repeated flooding prompted the construction of a dam, and, after the river was redirected, the tunnels were lit, paved, and transformed into roadways. Michael Fitzpatrick and Darian Day turn their lens down into the beginnings of a tunnel from the height of a pedestrian bridge. The rich colors of the painted wall provide a marvelous backdrop for an old and weathered streetlamp. They present the photograph in a passe partout of acid-free mat board.
