Women from the Ixil Maya community in Guatemala are proud to share their weaving legacy through the Cotzal Artisan Cooperative. Working on the back strap loom, they weave this light and dark green cotton shoulder bag with yellow, beige, blue, orange, pink and red figures. An exterior zipper pocket on the back keeps keys and cell phone handy. The images on the front represent the beliefs held by the ancient Maya, including the deer, which represents freedom as well as the forests. The milpa (corn) symbolizes the beauty of our natural environment; and the bird with outstretched wings, known as Tzichin, is believed to attract riches. The moss green cotton interior includes one zipper pocket.
