Wearing a handsome crown, this pule wood mask with modern batik motifs tells the story of Panji Laras. According to a Javanese folktale, Laras lived in a small banana leaf hut with his mother and his rooster, Cindelaras. He loved his rooster and took it everywhere, winning every cockfight they entered. However, when Cindelaras won a cockfight organized by a prince, the latter accused Panji Laras of cheating. His mother, sensing her son was in danger, went looking for him. She found Laras at court where the king was very angry at him, but when he saw Laras' mother he realized she was his long lost love and was happy to know that Laras was his son, so they all lived together happily ever after.
