Although not the first actor to don the scrubs of Max Brand’s Dr. Kildare, Lew Ayres soon became synonymous with the young intern, playing the unconventional doctor in nine films for MGM from 1938 until 1942. Lionel Barrymore starred opposite as the curmudgeonly mentor Dr. Gillespie while lovely Laraine Day played love interest nurse Mary Lamont.
