Masks are widespread throughout Africa. Each holds a specific meaning and custom, depending on the tribe. Though at times fearsome and foreboding in appearance, these masks have a certain subtle attractiveness. Masks are believed to unite the spirit of an ancestor with the living person wearing it, says Ghanaian artist Asayaw Osahene Asante.
