Seen from a slight angle, the features of an ancient monarch are strong and beautiful. Moonlight plays across the terracotta image, captured in this painting by Pakaphong. It depicts a Bayon Face, named for a stone tower in the Khmer city of Nakorn Thom. Its name means paichayon, that is, the castle of Indhra, the highest angel in Buddhist belief. Beginning in the early 9th century, the Khmer Empire of present-day Cambodia began to flourish. This artistically rich empire continued its rise until the 11th century.
