Women from the Ixil community of Maya origin share their historic textiles through the Cotzal Artisan Cooperative. Working on the back strap loom, they weave this cotton table runner in a dramatic deep russet hue. It is centered by images that represent the legacy of their Maya ancestors, including the milpa (corn), symbolizing the beauty of our natural environment. The bird, known as Tzichin, is believed to attract riches, and arrows represent the movement of the wind, as well as of the universe. They converge into an 'x' to represent the four cardinal points as well as the four elements.
